Telegrams/Letters Between British Colonial Officers/PM Leading Towards the Formation of Malaysia.

The formation of Malaysia in 1963 was not a sudden political event, but the result of years of confidential discussions, diplomatic negotiations, and strategic planning between British colonial administrators, Malayan leaders, and officials in Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Many of these once-secret communications — including telegrams, memoranda, cabinet papers, and letters exchanged between British Colonial Officers and Prime Ministers — have since been declassified and released through archives in the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Malaysia.

Key figures involved in these communications included:

  • Tunku Abdul Rahman
  • Lord Cobbold
  • David Watherston
  • Lee Kuan Yew
  • Ghazali Shafie

Among the most important historical records are:

  • Confidential communications leading up to the signing of the Malaysia Agreement 1963.
  • The Cobbold Commission report and correspondence regarding public opinion in Sabah and Sarawak.
  • British Colonial Office telegrams discussing security concerns, communism, and regional stability in Southeast Asia.
  • Negotiations surrounding the inclusion of Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak into the Federation of Malaysia.

Very important for us to know.
